Dollar Store Halloween: Skull Chandelier

Supplies

  • Plastic or Styrofoam Skulls (I got these from a dollar store, but you can get yours anywhere cheap skulls are found)
  • Paint (I’m using black and brown but you can throw in yellows or reds to make a rusty look, or greens to make it gross and mossy)
  • A Cup of Water
  • A Paint Brush
  • A plate or palette to mix on
  • Paper towel or other cloth you won’t get in trouble for ruining
Note: I’m going to stick these on a chandelier in my home, however, you can use this technique to decorate anything. It’s called “weathering.”

Step 1: Paint the Skulls

  • Grab your skull (a plastic one, this craft is easy, no need for deep mental reflection)
  • Put some paint on your plate and soak your brush in the cup of water.
  • Mix the paint with the wet paint brush, making a nice light wash.
  • Start brushing on the paint.
  • Get it into any cracks and crevasses first, make sure the paint in really getting in there and making it look grimy.

Step 3: Use it!

You’re now a master at the real actual prop and costume design technique called “weathering” used by prop masters on everything from your favorite TV show to million dollar films.

Go forth and use your new skill. You can weather anything (and almost anything can be used to weather an item) and make it look old. Some weathering can even be made temporary so you don’t get yelled at for “ruining” your mother’s nice silver for a halloween display.

Have fun y'all!
