TBR: Shatter Me (Shatter Me Series, Book #1) by Taherah Mafi

The highly engrossing dystopian novels just don’t stop coming, do they? Shatter Me, the first of a 6-part series, is a just as well-written yet distinctive, book that is up to par with novels such as Marie Lu’s Skyhunter. The story’s main character is Juliette, a 17-year-old teen who has been locked up in an asylum for nearly a year for possessing a special power, and the setting is somewhat into the far future, in which a corrupt, malicious organization that calls itself The Reestablishment seeks to take control of the citizens and parts of the world that have not yet suffered from death or global warming.

In Shatter Me, you’ll find certain phrases and sentences in the text crossed out with lines (basically strikethroughs). These, which are intended and have been placed to better convey that the novel is written from Juliette’s perspective effectively makes the entire novel more realistic and is a unique aspect that is a definite plus.

If you’re looking for action, more specifically, scenes throughout the book where characters are engaged in physical combat and that sort of thing, you could be slightly disappointed. However, this novel creates tension and suspense in different ways, which will hopefully leave you satisfied. Shatter Me also has a dark mood for a good part of it, as can be expected of a dystopian book, and the author creates it effectively. My favorite dystopian series still has got to be the Legend series, but Shatter Me has definitely not disappointed me yet. Looking forward to the next book in the series and to you trying this one out!
