Looking for a fun, creative way to express your love and appreciation for a special someone this Valentine’s Day? This origami heart is not only SUPER easy and simple to make, but also super cute! It will definitely touch the heart of the person you are giving it to! The steps outlined below are very simple, so don’t think you’re doing anything wrong if it only takes you 10-15 minutes to complete!
Step 1 – Assemble your supplies and materials.
To complete this craft, you will need:
A sheet of construction paper (can just be plain white copy paper, colored paper, origami paper, patterned…anything you want!!)
A pair of scissors
Recommended: Tape and/or glue
Optional: Markers, colored pencils, stickers, lace, string, etc. (anything you’d like to use to decorate your origami heart!)
Step 2 – Cut your piece of paper paper.
Regardless of whatever type of paper you use (whether it’s construction, plain white, origami paper, etc.), cut it into the shape of a square. Please determine how big or small you’d like your heart to be before cutting the square!
Here are some general tips/measurements:
P.S. I will be using and making mine out of a 15 x 15 mm piece of paper.
Size of square (length x width):
15 mm x 15 mm
*about the same length as your hand until your fingertips*
20 mm x 20 mm

Step 3 – Fold diagonals.
Place your square paper in front of you (if you are using a patterned paper, make sure the side that is on top is the side that is NOT patterned/will not be seen), so that a straight edge is facing you. Then, turn the paper 90° so that one of the corners of the square is now facing you. Your square should now look like a diamond. Fold the paper in half, so that the corner that was once facing you aligns with the other corner. Your paper should now look like a triangle. Next, unfold the triangle, and you should be back to a square. Twist your paper 90°, and do the exact same thing, this time with the other corner and its opposite. Unfold your paper to turn it back into a square. At this point, your paper should have two diagonals intersecting each other.
Step 4 – Fold the Corners.
Position your paper so that it looks like a diamond facing you.
Grab the bottom corner (the one that is closest to you), and fold it up so that the tip touches the center of the diamond.
Then, grab the upper corner (opposite to the corner you just folded), and fold it down so that it touches the middle of the triangle you had just made in the previous step. You should now have two triangles – a smaller one, and a bigger one whose corner points at you.
Step 5 – Assemble the Heart.
Turn the whole thing 180° so that the smaller triangle fold now faces you and the bigger triangle faces away.
Take the right side and fold it over so that the edge touches the middle of the triangle (this line has already been created and should serve as a reference).
Then, do the exact same thing with the left side. Fold it over so that the edge touches the middle straight line. Once you are done with this step, your paper should now have a decent shape of a heart (with pointed corners which we will fix in the next step!).
Step 6 – Finishing Touches
Flip your “pointy” heart so that you are looking at the back side of the heart.
Grab one of the tips of the heart that is pointing at you, and fold it down so that it meets the straight line. Do the same for the other tip.
Then, rotate your paper 90° and fold the tip (that was originally on the side) a bit forward. Do the same for the other tip on the side. Once folded, you will have made four triangle flaps at the back of the heart.
Optional
If the flaps at the back or front of the heart are not staying down, feel free to tape or glue them down! If you would like, decorate your heart by coloring it, writing a lovely letter for your friend/family member, or even taping the front and inserting a little card inside of the heart! Be sure to HAVE FUN and BE CREATIVE! :))
