TBR: The Girl With The Louding Voice by Abi Daré

The Girl With The Louding Voice is a well-crafted, moving tale centered around a teenage girl named Adunni whose main dream is to become a teacher when she grows up and make her family proud and happy. Numerous barriers as a result of her living in a rural Nigerian village, however, stand in her way and threaten to crush her dream. This book tells the story of how even in the face of daunting obstacles, Adunni rises to the challenge.

I liked this book mainly because it made me feel more knowledgeable about Nigeria and what life is like there. It was also extremely inspirational and touching, and Adunni as a character feels so genuine and easy to connect to. In many ways, this novel helped me reflect on the many things I take for granted being middle-class in a country like America.

One of the core messages I think can be taken away from this novel is how so many people are defined and driven by money. Now, this is something pretty obvious in everyday society, but the novel sort of presents this theme in a different way, in its rarest form. But of course, as in real life, there are those whose hearts are pure and those who aren’t completely greedy at the core. The characters who are emblematic of this are Adunni and Tia Dada (a kind-hearted neighbor of Big Madam, the “master” of Adunni when she is a servant in Big Madam’s home), and the story is just overall very wholesome and touching. There are some other books I’ve observed containing parallels or similar messages to this one, but The Girl With The Louding Voice is definitely still worth trying, as components of its story still serve to make it unique.
