If you’re a fan of adventure fantasy novels, you’ve probably heard of the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan. And if you’ve read that series, you’ve most likely been introduced to the Heroes of Olympus series. But there’s also a third series that connects to these. It’s called the Trials of Apollo.
It is based on the adventures of the Greek god Apollo (god of poetry, the sun, archery, music and more), who has been cast down to earth by Zeus (the Greek god of the heavens and Apollo’s father) and turned into a mortal teenage boy named Lester Papadopoulos. The only way for Apollo to reclaim his spot on Mount Olympus with the other gods is by restoring five Oracles that have gone dark over the years. An oracle is something or someone who provides prophecies.
Lester has to be bound to a demigod, meaning that he must serve and listen to that person as long as they have both god and human blood. While Lester is trying to find Percy Jackson so as to be duty-bound to Percy, he is unwillingly bound to a daughter of Demeter (the Greek goddess of agriculture) named Meg. Their fates are now intertwined. Meg is rather odd, and has quite a strange backstory regarding her relationship with the oracles that Apollo is trying to save.
Apollo and Meg’s journey take them from New York City to Indianapolis, Indiana to Southern California to the San Francisco Bay Area and all the way back to New York City. Along the way they run into many characters who will be familiar to you from the Percy Jackson and Heroes of Olympus series. Apollo comes across Camp Half-Blood, the training grounds for Greek demigods, and Camp Jupiter, the training grounds for Roman demigods. He meets Percy, Annabeth, Hazel, Reyna, Frank, Piper and Jason over the course of his expeditions, and they’ll help him with various aspects of his journey.
This new book, The Tower of Nero, is the fifth and last installment of the Trials of Apollo series. It comes out on the week of October fifth. Make sure to get yourself a copy! If you need a refresher on the previous books of the series, be sure to check them out from your local library.
