The Rule of Thoughts is the engrossing sequel to The Eye of Minds and features the same highly likable characters Michael, Sarah, and Bryson. Essentially in this part of The Mortality Doctrine series, the 3 teenage hackers have now escaped from the Path within the VirtNet simulation world that led them to the AI cyberterrorist Kaine, and now they must work to stop him from replacing human minds with AI (or Tangent as they’re referred to in the book) minds in human bodies via the Coffin and VirtNet systems. And perhaps most intriguing of all about this book, Michael, a Tangent himself, now inhabits the body of a human being by the name of Jackson. This book is more than just a mere piece of YA entertainment; it leads us to ask serious questions about our future and what it means to be human.
Now, if you aren’t of the philosophical or futuristic type, I understand why the above statement may not be so appealing to you. However, that’s simply another sort of added bonus element of the book that you can choose to ignore if you don’t find it interesting. In terms of plot, I’d have to rate the book pretty average, to be honest, because the plot is just sort of average and a bit bland in some parts like the sequels of a lot of good action movies. But hey, I finished it when I was reading it for leisure, so that’s saying something, right? If you are someone who reads to find interesting and creative plots, you should still read this book because the sequel to this one, the third book in the series, is full of that, something I’ll
be discussing in my review for that novel. Furthermore, the setting is still somewhat unique and
adds that appealing futuristic element to the book. I also guarantee that the mysterious character introduced towards the end of the book will make you want to read the next book in the series as well. In conclusion, The Rule of Thoughts, like The Eye of Minds is a worthwhile read. There are truly so many great dystopian novels to be read and explored!
